Budget minded Scope needed

I recently found I need a Scope---Don't have $6OO+ for one right now.

Any Ideas on tough decent Scope <$250.

Looking for the best bang for the buck--something that can sit on its perch for years if need be before it gets upgraded.

The perch demands better but Its not in the wallet right now.

300yds or less would be max.

Thanks

I'd say to find something used, a Leupold, B&L, Bushnell, Nikon. It's been my experience that really cheap scopes aren't worth it.

I just checked ebay. This auction has 30 minutes to run, buy this if you can, it's an incredible deal

http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-Bushnell-6-2...3%3A1|294%3A50

Edit: I take that back, it come from China and I'm suspicious of really good deals from China. But still lots on ebay.

What are you using it on? Shotgun, pistol, rifle, crossbow?

That will help my input. :)

Do some searches for Russian made scopes, usually half the price
for similar quality glass. They are usually heavier and maybe not as pretty but
for function per dollar, they are quite a bargin.

Go ahead, buy a cheap scope..... but do not mount it on the rifle.
If you only have a few hundred bucks for glass, get a spotting scope, and a good set of IRON sights for the gun.
cheap telescopic sights are worth every penny... dont bother.

I had great luck with the Burris Full Field of view line for $199 on sale at Cabelas with a free set of binoculars. Has the BDC recticle. I had one on a .308 and the other on a 6.5x55 swiss. Unfortunately they were lost in a boating accident over some deep muddy water and never found.

+1 on the Burris Fullfield II 3-9x40 scope. I put one on my daughter's deer rifle, and I have been quite impressed. It compared favorably with the much more expensive Leupold VX-II I had on my own rifle at the time (also a Savage .308, BTW). Also consider the Nikon Buckmaster, Sightron SII and Bushnell Elite 3200. If you can stretch the budget to $300, I'd go with the Bushnell Elite 4200 3-9x40.

+2 on the Fullfield. Best bang (ha, get it?) for the buck.

Sometimes you can find them bundled with binoculars (pretty decent ones) or a spotting scope.

Check out http://www.samplelist.com, which sells discounted scopes. Many are new, or were 'floor samples.'

Re: Budget minded Scope needed

I have heard nothing but good things on these scopes. I have bought two ... for my Remington .308, and .243.

http://www.swfa.com/ss_review_very_high_power.aspx

Custom Rem 700 varmint rifle chambered in 6mm MR wildcat with Tasco SS16x42 scope.

The Tasco Super Sniper is without a doubt the best scope for the money available today. Don't let the Tasco brand name fool you into thinking the Super Sniper scopes are low-end units not worthy of being placed on an expensive rifle. Tasco is free to purchase components according to their requirements and pricing.

As a result, Tasco can build any quality of scope desired. In fact this trio of Super Sniper scopes were built to such exacting standards that they were awarded US Navy contract #N00164-93-C-205 for use on military sniper rifles. As can be imagined, a scope built to withstand the rigors of military service is more than tough enough to be used on the most extreme hunting or competition rifle. They are so tough, they are even rated for use on .50 caliber sniper rifles.

Three models, the 10x, 16x and 20x occupy the Super Sniper line. These fixed power rifle scopes feature a 30mm tube, hand adjustable micrometer target turrets, multicoated optics, an easy focus ocular lens and parallax adjustment. The parallax adjustment is via a ring that resides where the power ring would normally be on a variable scope while a variant of the SS10x42 scope has the parallax adjustment as a third turret on the left side.

All three models are identical in size and can only be distinguished by the magnification value stamped on the tube.
Model FOV @ 100 yds Eye Relief Length Weight
SS10x42 13' 4" 14.25" 26oz
SS16x42 6.9' 3.75" 14.25" 26oz
SS20x42 6.2' 3.5" 14.25" 26oz

http://www.swfa.com/search.aspx?keyw...btn_search.y=9

These big scopes are the archetype of the term “heavy duty” and they look it. Everything from the ocular lens to the turrets is bigger than normal to match the oversized main tube. The reticle is etched on glass for maximum resistance to recoil and shock, even from the punishing .50 BMG cartridge. Tasco claims the scopes are waterproof, shock proof, fog proof and capable of withstanding temperatures from 50 degrees (-45C) to 130 degrees (54C) and altitudes of 30,000 feet to depths of 15 feet in salt water.

HEY RICHG

This looks like its all business.http://www.swfa.com/images/product/medium/SS10X42M.jpg

How do you like yours?

Is 16x good for you?

The Price point looks good!

WOuld any base and mounts work in 33mm?

Does it hold adjustment when putting in a case? I'm asking because a man I know said big turrets tend to spin when putting them in soft cases makeing them need to be resighted every time---Pain in the butt

Thanks

Agreed with most of above.....
The newer Leapers scopes have been fine....not super, but fine. It's Chinese, but then so is VarX1 from Leupold IIRC.
Can't easily get away from that for the price.

Re: Budget minded Scope needed

I like the mid to higher end Bushnells....I think they are by far the best value in optics....their $200 - $300 scopes are as good of better than others $500+ optics.

You can get into their Banner Series for $100, Trophy Series for $100-$200, Elite 3200 Series for $200-$300, and Elite 4200 for $300 - $400.

I have a Remington 700 .308 PSS Police Sniper System that I'm thinking of adding a Bushnell Elite series scope....

I've owned a lot of Burris scopes in the $600+ range.....and i think the upper end bushnells are right there....

No caps? Every scope I've ever had has turret caps for just that reason. Maybe there is a way to lock them down but you can't have exposed adjustment, you would never be able to trust your zero.

I have not mounted mine yet ... but I did a lot of research on this product ... and all of it was surprisingly great to excellent. Except for some low light situations everyone only raved about it. It is built to mil specs. I thought the price was right for what I wanted to invest in a big bang for the buck reach-out-and-touch-someone rifle. I bought the mounts and flip lens caps separately. I have played with the scope ... it is an incredible piece of machinery.

PS. It holding its adjustments was one the the things most evaluators talked about.... rock solid.

How about a Nikon Prostaff 3-9x40 or a 3-9x50.. They are both nice glass for the price... I own (2) 3-9x40 great scope for the money. Also a lifetime warranty. You can't beat it.

Re: Budget minded Scope needed

I've purchased a few scopes from www.opticsplanet.com They ship super fast. I think I mentioned in another post that I ordered on the 23rd of Dec. and received on the 24th. WOW! I fully expected to see it well into the New Year. Prices were fair, good selection, and everything was nicely packaged.

I've bought optics elsewhere before and the packaging was only so-so. Opticsplanet almost packs as good as APMEX. Almost. It would be difficult to have a better secured package than how APMEX does it.

I like the other suggestions on brands, etc. But I'm getting to where I prefer lower magnifications. I find myself liking 4-6X most On my one rifle with a variable to 9X it stays at 4X, I just don't use it. Maybe if I lived somewhere with vast open plains that would be a consideration, but here I can't hardly see beyond 100 yards due to the trees and thicket. So for me I like a larger reticle and not so much magnification. (Wish I had known this earlier and I wouldn't have made some silly purchases......)

I have two refurbed Nikon Prostaff 2-7x32, and they are excellent, bright bright glass, and accurate.

I bought from Natchez, who are also excellent to deal with.

Prices up 50% from when I bought a few years ago.
